Obituary for Celamcio Magdalen Charbonnet

Celamcio Magdalen Barbe Charbonnet peacefully entered into eternal rest surrounded by her loving family at Passages Hospice on January 4, 2019 at the age of 84. Slim, as she was affectionately called, was born in New Orleans to her parents, Golder Walker Barbe and Louis Barbe on October 16, 1934. She attended Valena C. Jones Elementary School and Joseph S. Clark High School. In December of 1952, Slim married Ernest Peter Charbonnet (Danny), a union that lasted 66 years. From this union, three children were born; Denise, Ernest Ferrell (Freddie) and Alcerdes (Elsie). Slim devoted her life to family - immediate and extended. She loved people and "fixing the broken" was her life's mission. Slim never met a problem or situation she could not solve. She surrounded others with love, hope and her delicious creole cooking! Slim showed the way and provided the example for others as to how to face tragedy head on. She took care of her Mother when that time came. When her son Freddie lost his wife Karen in childbirth, Slim took her son and grandson into the family home and assisted with Steve's upbringing. Slim's children and grandchildren were always in her home and in her life. Danny, Denise, Freddie and Elsie learned to share Slim because she gave of herself to others and their home was always filled with people in need. Slim also enjoyed a career that spanned 40 years. She worked outside the home at Sears for 25 years. After retiring from Sears, she worked at Maison Blanche, and with one of her best friends, Belinda Comboy, in the wallpaper business. She was especially proud of the work they did at Harrahs Casino and the Columns Hotel in uptown New Orleans. Slim is preceded in death by her parents, her brother (Louis Barbe), brothers-in-law (Anthony Charbonnet, Calvin Charbonnet, Peter Mitchell), sisters-in-law (Vera Gabriel, Shirley Mitchell, Alcerdes Charbonnet), son-in-law (Linus Coignet) daughter-in-law (Karen Charbonnet), nephew (Louis Barbe, Jr.), and niece (Dionne Barbe). Left to mourn her loss are her husband, Ernest (Danny), her children, Denise, Ernest (Cathy) and Elsie, grandchildren (Sidney (Catherine), Lauren (Rodney), Steve (Anya), Christahrisl, Rachel, Kevin (Marlena), Brian), great grandchildren (Sidney, Olivia, Brian, Trenton, Dylaylan, Nace, Nivey), and a host of relatives and friends. Relatives and friends are invited to attend A Celebration of Life honoring Mrs. Celamcio B. Charbonnet on Monday, January 14, 2019 at 2:00 P.M. at Charbonnet - Labat - Glapion, 1615 Saint Phillip Street, New Orleans, Louisiana, 70116. Visitation begins at 1:00 P.M. Interment, Private.
