Obituary for Mack Felton

Dr. Mack ("Doc") Felton, Jr. It is with the greatest sadness we announce the passing of Dr. Mack Felton Jr. on Thursday, December 10, 2020 at the age of 86. Born in New Orleans on March 21, 1934, he was the fourth child of the late Mack and Enola Felton. He is survived by two brothers, Alfred and Herbert Felton and a sister, Lillie Files and a host of nieces and nephews. He was the loving husband of Norma Davis Felton and proud father of Mack Anthony (Tasha), Michael Andrew (Maria),and twin daughters, Marilyn Joyce and Carolyn Jean. He doted on his three grandchildren, Rachel, Jasmine and Ariana. Ever the patriot, he proudly enlisted in the United States Army in 1955 and was honorably discharged in 1958. It was at Southern University in Baton Rouge that he met the love of his life, Norma Jean Davis. They were married on August 13, 1961. He earned a Masters of Science degree in Biology from Loyola University, and a Doctorate in Pathogenic Microbiology from Oregon State University. While earning his doctorate, he and his wife moved their family to Oregon where they lived for three years. He returned to New Orleans in 1972 and joined the faculty of Southern University in New Orleans (SUNO). He worked at SUNO for twenty –seven years as a professor of biology and as the Chair of the Department of Biology. In 1992 he retired (for three days) before joining the Dillard University faculty as a professor of biology, where he worked for eleven years before retiring a second time. After a brief retirement, he was awarded an Emeritus Professorship in biology at Mississippi Valley State University(MVSU). He retired from MVSU in 2014 after more than 50 years as an educator. Anyone who had the privilege of meeting Mack Felton Jr. immediately became aware of his love for life and family. A great family man, he devoted himself wholeheartedly to ensuring the well-being of his children and to the great love of his life, Dr. Norma Davis Felton. His booming voice was most often heard raised in laughter and jovial conversation with friends and family. He knew no stranger and would befriend anyone who needed his help. Whether mentoring his students or just being there as "Uncle Toot" or "Uncle Mack" for his many nieces and nephews, he always had patience and sage advice. Dr. Felton's influence was felt beyond the walls of SUNO, Dillard and MVSU where he worked. He was always willing to give needed supplies to the middle school where his wife Norma worked for many years and to team up with his close friend and colleague Dr. Clyde Smith to teach a science class or judge a science fair in one of the public schools. He is preceded in death by his parents, Mack Felton and Enola Felton and his brothers Charles, Samuel and Richard Felton. Funeral services will be held Friday, December 18, 2020 at 11:00 am at Second Zion Baptist Church No.1, 2929 Second Street, New Orleans, LA 70113.
