Obituary for Shirley Howard

Shirley Ann Coleman Howard was called home by God on Wednesday, January 8, 2021 at Ochsner Hospital, St. Bernard. She was born on October 23, 1949 in New Orleans, LA to the late Thomas, Sr. and Eola Coleman. Wife of Billy Howard, Sr. Mother of Shana, Billy and the late Stacy Howard. Shirley dedicated her life to Christ at an early age and became a member of Olivet Missionary Baptist Church. She later joined and continued serving God as a member of Greater St. Stephen Full Gospel Baptist Church. Shirley was a dedicated and unwavering alumna of the Class of 1968 at George Washington Carver Senior High School. She continued her education, receiving a Bachelor of Science Degree in Health and Physical Education at Southern University of New Orleans. With the compassion for children, Shirley found a passion for teaching. She went on to teach for 35 years in the Orleans Parish School System. Shirley gave her services mostly at her alma mater, George Washington Carver Jr./Sr High School. Shirley is cherished in memory by her husband, Billy Howard, Sr; children, Shana Howard Berry (Marrious), Billy Howard, Jr. (Ciera); grandchildren, Shania Howard, Ajya Howard, Shane Berry, Taylor Howard and Kai Howard; siblings, Diane Julien and Thomas Coleman, Jr. (Barbara); sisters-in-law, Joycelyn Smith, Diane Cola, Marie Hall, Lana Hall Jenkins (Daryl) and Dana Hall Hingle (Cayetano); aunt, Dorothy Coleman, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. A private Funeral service will be held in the Chapel of Charbonnet Labat Glapion Funeral Home, 1615 St. Philip Street, New Orleans, LA 70116 on Saturday, January 23, 2021 at 2 PM. Interment private. A Public Visitation will begin at 1 PM.
