Obituary for Gaylor Spiller

Gaylor Ann Spiller was born in New Orleans, LA on April 22nd, 1954 to the late Reverend Raphael Spiller and Mae Velma McCan Spiller. Madam Spiller was the second of six children born to her mother. She accepted Christ in her youth and was baptized at Star Bethel Baptist Church in New Orleans, LA by the late Reverend Hosea Rivers. She attended J.S. Clark High School and chose to pursue a military career when she was just 19 years old, joining the United States Department of the Army in 1973. She later enlisted in the State of Louisiana National Guard where she served for almost 20 years. Madam Spiller was distinguished as the first female and the first woman of color to serve in the 141st Artillery of the 256th Infantry Brigade Unit at Jackson Barracks in New Orleans, LA. More recently her career included paralegal positions with the Orleans Parish Criminal District Court, private law firms, as well as other state level agencies. Madam Spiller also worked on the federal level with both, the United States Veterans Administration and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), where she supervised seven offices in four different states. In April 2015 she became a candidate for the NAACP Jefferson Parish Branch and won. Serving diligently, fighting for justice and advocating until her untimely passing, was her life's work. Madam Spiller leaves to cherish precious memories, two children, Destany Pruitt-Spiller and Joshua Spiller; siblings, Debra J. Hall, Geraldine Simpson Green, Anella Spiller Coleman, Jewel Spiller White, Rachel Spiller Riles and Joaquina Spiller Cummings. Also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and dear friends. In addition to her parents, Madam Spiller was also preceded in death by siblings, Gregory G. Spiller, Gary G. Spiller, Charles R. Spiller, Margaret A. Spiller and Raphael Spiller; stepmother, Ruby Spiller, stepfather, William H. Simpson and sister in law, Addie Spiller. A PRIVATE Funeral Service honoring the life and legacy of Madam Gaylor Ann Spiller will be held in the Chapel of Charbonnet Labat Glapion Funeral Home, 1615 St. Philip Street, New Orleans, LA 70116 on Friday, January 22, 2021 at 2 PM, Rev. Kevin Gabriel, Sr., Officiating. Interment PRIVATE. A public visitation will begin at 12 noon IN THE CHAPEL. A DRIVE THROUGH viewing will also be held at Charbonnet Labat Glapion on Friday, January 22, 2021 from 10 AM until 11:30 AM.
