Obituary for Germaine Luke

Germaine Maurice Luke was born on October 6, 1932 to Marcel Maurice, Sr. and Regina Gerard Maurice. The family lived in New Orleans' 7th Ward. Her life on earth came to an end on Wednesday, November 3, 2021 in New Orleans, LA when she was called to her Heavenly Home to be with the Lord at the age of 89. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Leroy Charles Luke. To this union, identical twin girls were born, Dr. Carlen Luke McLin and the late Dr. Carla Luke. Germaine was a life-long resident of New Orleans, LA. Germaine was a devoted and loving mother. Her extended family, which included her siblings, nieces and nephews, shared many happy times. She loved sharing her wisdom and advice with others, especially with her children and grandchildren, who she loved so dearly. Germaine received her B.A. and Master's Degree from Xavier University of New Orleans. She spent the largest part of her teaching career in the Orleans Parish Public School System, specializing in early childhood education. She was an imaginative and devoted educator who took pride in creating a welcoming classroom environment where learning felt fun and easy. Before retirement, after forty years, Germaine was a teacher at Valena C. Jones Elementary School. She also served as a counselor at Durham Middle School, a reading consultant at Corpus Christi Grammar School, a reading specialist at Redeemer-Seton High School and vice principal at Ames Elementary School in Jefferson Parish. In retirement, she basked with pride and joy whenever her former students thanked her for being their teacher. An outstanding seamstress, she was creative, intuitive, sensitive, articulate and expressive. Her daughters' wedding gowns exemplify her finest creations. Germaine was preceded in death by her brothers, Marcel Maurice, Jr., Romaine Maurice and her grandson, Antonio Luke. Germaine Maurice Luke is survived by her daughter, Dr. Carlen Luke McLin (Kevin Sr.); grandson, Kevin J. McLin, Jr. and sister, Lorraine Butler. Also survived by nieces Brenda Butler,Valerie Maurice and Pamela Maurice; nephews, Dwayne Butler and Dr. Dwight Green (Dr.Lynn Green). A Mass of Christian burial honoring the life and legacy of the late Mrs. Germaine Maurice Luke will be held at Corpus Christi-Epiphany Catholic Church, 2022 St. Bernard Avenue, New Orleans, LA on Saturday, November 13, 2021 at 10 am. Interment Resthaven Memorial Park, New Orleans East. Visitation 8 a.m. in the church.
