MARTHA PAYTON OBITUARY
Martha Ann Payton was born in Rockport, MS on June 26, 1939 to the late Deotis Powell and Linda Magee-Wilson. She relocated to New Orleans at an early age with her aunt, the late Martha Powell-Johnson, who raised her as her own. Martha accepted Christ early in life. She was a member of Holy Temple Church of God in Christ and later IDMR Bible School. Martha entered eternal rest on Tuesday, July 19, 2022 at 83 years young. She was a devoted wife, homemaker, mother and grandmother who loved music and was a fashion inspiration to all! She is the matriarch of the Payton Family. Martha's life-motto is "Family First" because to her, Family is Everything! In addition to her father and both mothers, Martha is also preceded in death by her husband, Elvia E. "Pete" Payton, Sr.; brother, Willie Gene Powell; uncle, Zebdee Magee; three beloved sons, Elvia E. Payton, Jr., Andrew Payton, Sr. and Vernell Payton, Sr. From Pete and Martha's union, thirteen children were born, Elvia Jr., Andrew (Saundrea), Vernell, Eugene, Reginald, Darryl (Debbie), Aaron (Lula), Kevin (Denise), Belinda, Glinda, Steven Carde (Dionne), Yolanda and Romell (Joy). Also survived by sisters, Madge Powell and Catherine Powell-Brown; Godchild, Rosie Ann Showers; ten children, thirty-two grandchildren, forty-six great-grandchildren, twenty great-great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends who love her dearly. Martha will be deeply missed by her family, friends and all who knew her. A Celebration service honoring the life and legacy of the late Mrs. Martha Ann Payton will be held at Gentilly Baptist Church, 5141 Franklin Avenue, New Orleans, LA on Saturday, August 6, 2022 at 10 am. Interment: Providence Memorial Park and Mausoleum, 8200 Airline Drive, Metairie, LA 70003. Visitation 9 am in the church. The services will be livestreamed for those loved ones who cannot be in attendance.
