Obituary for LaVergne Ann Monette

LAVERGNE MONETTE OBITUARY
Celebrated opera singer, LaVergne Ann Monette passed away at the age of 85, on Thursday, August 18, 2022. She was born on December 16, 1936, to the late Adolph and Floramel Monette. Stepdaughter of the late Isabel Moore Monette. LaVergne is survived by sisters, Lenora Monette Carlson, Charlenia Monette (Dannel) and Gayle Moore Lavigne, as well as a host of nieces, nephews and their families, other relatives and friends. LaVergne not only loved music, but she also lived it. She enjoyed a rare and exceptional opera career, playing leads at both the Metropolitan Opera, New York City Opera Company and touring throughout Europe and Finland. Later, she taught opera at Indiana University, Xavier University and Delgado Community College. She continued sharing her gift by teaching voice and piano to students of all ages and by singing at mass every weekend at churches throughout New Orleans. Over the past two years, LaVergne was honored with four lifetime achievement awards from various opera organizations and was twice awarded The Order of St. Louis Award by the Archdiocese of New Orleans. Relatives and friends; Priest and parishioners of St. Augustine, St. Leo-St. Raymond and St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Churches are invited to attend the funeral. A Mass of Christian burial honoring the life and legacy of the late LaVergne Ann Monette will be held at St. Peter Claver Catholic Church, 1923 St. Philip Street, New Orleans, LA 70116 on Thursday, September 8, 2022 at 10 am.
