Obituary for Emelda Mary ""Tmel"" Lewis

EMELDA LEWIS-ROGERS OBITUARY
Mrs. Emelda Mary Lewis-Rogers, also known as "Tmel," was born on December 25, 1939 in New Orleans, LA to the late John and Daisy Sylvester Lewis. At the age of 82 years, she went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, October 13, 2022 surrounded by family. Emelda was a member of Temple of Faith Bible Church, where she was Ordained as Mother Lewis, Pastored by Dr. Reverend Kenneth Augustus Walker in Atlanta, GA. Prior to Hurricane Katrina, she was a member of Austerlitz Street Baptist Church in New Orleans where she sang in the choir for many years under Reverend Edward Parker. "Tmel" was also a member of The Order of Eastern Stars, Day Light #36. In addition to her parents, Emelda was also preceded in death by her husband, the late Hommer Rogers. Although she never had children of her own, she took Daisy Alvis-Nandkumar under her wing as her own and treated her children, Bianca Dominguez and Khemraj Nandkumar Jr., as her own grandchildren. Godmother of Daisy Alvis-Nandkumar and Kiley Love. Emelda was employed at the Hotel Monteleone and later retired from the New Orleans Rehabilitation Facility and 13 years prior to Hurricane Katrina, she was employed at Reliable Sitting Service for the Elderly under the ownership of Daisy Alvis-Nandkumar. During this period, Emelda also met the love of her life, Roosevelt Tucker, who also preceded her in death. Emelda was the second oldest child of twelve which four she shares with her late parents, John Lewis and Daisy Sylvester-Lewis; Delories Lewis-Youngblood-Saloy, Shirley Lewis-Alvis-Wimberly (David) and Milton Lewis (Glenda). She also cherished her other siblings, Bobby Varnado (Mattie), John JL-Varnado and Larry Varnado (Patricia Brooks), Gary Lewis, Janet Lewis-Handy, Cathy Lewis-Hall, Penny Lewis-Smith (Glenn) and Sharon Cookie Lewis. Emelda loved her family and also leaves to mourn her passing, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. A Celebration service honoring the life and legacy of the late Mrs. Emelda Lewis-Rogers will be held at Gentilly Baptist Church, 5141 Franklin Avenue, New Orleans, LA 70122, on Saturday, October 22, 2022 at 10 am, Dr. Reverend Kenneth Augustus Walker of Atlanta, GA, officiating.
