Obituary for Ollie Mae Smith ""Gram"" Moore

OLLIE MOORE OBITUARY
Mother Ollie Smith Moore reached the end of her wonderful life on Sunday, October 30, 2022 at the age of 96, after a brief illness. Miss Ollie (or "Gram" to many) lived her life out loud. She never met a stranger and once she met you, she never forgot. She left a lasting impression on everyone she encountered. Ollie was born on December 9, 1926, to the late Tom and Adelle Smith in the 9th Ward. After graduating from Straight High School, she began her career at El Trelles Cigar Factory. She eventually moved on to a position at Macdee Textile, Inc. She loved sewing and could make the most difficult projects look simple. Although short lived, she married Samuel Vernon Henderson and this union was blessed with three children, Adelle Henderson (Basil T. Davis), the late Samuel Vernon, Jr. and Walter Thurman Henderson. She was later joined in Holy Matrimony with her her lifelong love, the late Alonza James Moore and their union was blessed with one child, Alonza Edgar Moore (Valerie A. Moore). In 1997, Ollie retired and enjoyed spending time with family and friends, as well as participating in various activities at her church. She was an active and lifelong member of Pilgrim Progress Missionary Baptist Church, where she served as deaconess and enjoyed teaching Sunday School. Throughout her life, Ollie enjoyed traveling to the Progressive National Baptist Conventions, as well as spending time with family. In addition to her husband, parents and children, Ollie was also preceded in death by her siblings, Kate Smith Mutley, Bertha Smith Amedee and Enoch Smith; grandchildren, Rawlin and Carla Henderson. In addition to her children, Ollie is also survived by fourteen grandchildren, a host of great and great-great grandchildren, church families of Pilgrim Progress Missionary, Zion Hill and St. James Baptist Churches, other family members and dear friends. A Celebration Service honoring the life and legacy of the late Mother Ollie Smith Moore will be held in the Chapel of Charbonnet Labat Glapion Funeral Home, 1615 St. Philip Street, New Orleans, LA 70116 on Thursday, November 10, 2022 at 10 am. Interment will be held at the Southeast LA Veterans Cemetery, Slidell, LA on Friday, November 18, 2022 at 10 am. Due to Covid variants, face masks and social distancing encouraged.
