Obituary for Raymond Dobard

Raymond Gerard Dobard was born on September 13, 1947, in New Orleans, LA to parents, Leo Joseph Dobard Sr. and Eunice Ruiz Dobard. They both preceded him in death along with his brother Kenneth Martin Dobard. On Monday, January 7, 2019, Raymond died of Lewy Body Dementia in New Orleans, LA. He is survived by his brothers, Leo Joseph Jr., Roy, Roland, Vernon and Adrian Dobard; his sisters-in-law, Rose B. Dobard and Jennetter F. Dobard. Also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Raymond was an accomplished educator, quilter & author. He received his B.A. in Fine Arts from Xavier University of LA 1970 and earned M.A. & Ph.D. degrees from Johns Hopkins University in the History of Art in 1973 & 1975. In 2010, Dr. Dobard retired as Professor of Art at Howard University after 35 years of service. Raymond took particular interest in the history of how enslaved African Americans encoded & used quilts to navigate their escape on the Underground Railroad. In addition to exhibiting his own skillfully sewn quilts, during the 1990s, Raymond served in various advisory & educational capacities with boards, museums & institutions (in Washington, D. C., Baltimore, Virginia & Nebraska) promoting the art & history of quilting. In 2000, Dr. Dobard co-authored the book Hidden in Plain View: A Secret Story of Quilts and the Underground Railroad. Relatives and friends of the family are all invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, January 19, 2019, for 10:00 am at Corpus Christi-Epiphany Catholic Church, 2022 St. Bernard Ave., New Orleans, LA. Visitation begins at 8:00 am in the church. A private interment will be held later. The family would like to thank the staffs of University Medical Center's Medical ICU Group, Chateau de Notre Dame Nursing Home, Amedisys Home Health Care, Daughters of Charity and the Ochsner Neurology Group for caring for Raymond during his illness. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Augustine High School (https://www.staugnola.org/) in memoriam of Dr. Raymond Dobard, Class of 1966, would be appreciated.
